I went to the remake of True Grit. It was a plesant way to spend an afternoon. Yes I am cheap enough to go to matinees. As with most remakes they make sure the origional plays on cable channels to increase the buzz. I watched the John Wayne version just before going to the cinema. Comparing the characters I found that that Matt Damon was a better Texas Ranger than Glen Campbell. Robert Duvall was a much better Lucky Ned Pepper in the origional than was Barry Pepper in the 2010 version. I did prefer the newer Mattie played by Hailee Steinfield. I believe we will see a lot more of this young actress.
In my discussions with my brother, he pointed out that the new version follows the book more closely. He also appreciated that the movie makers had researched the era and had the clothes, hardware and weapons spot on. He feels it was one of the best westerns he has seen.
I am still a huge John Wayne fan. I recognize that the viewing public would not have understood John Wayne playing the role as written in the book. He probably would have declined to play it that nasty. Jeff Bridges did a fine job. The old Rooster Cogburn was certainly more likeable.
In my book the 1969 version was better than the 2010. But I liked 1969 anyway. Many will disagree and the coffee hangouts will have many debates. Go see the movie and decide for yourself.
